Maureen Romano, Marketing Specialist

Maureen has over 20 years of marketing, public relations, and media experience. For 15 years as an Account Manager with a business-to-business marketing communications agency, Maureen was involved in the strategic development, implementation, and management of marketing plans for a broad base of clients, many in the Fortune 500. Maureen was also responsible for the media buying and planning. Her involvement in fine-tuning the creative message, extensive knowledge of publications covering multiple industries, and establishment of specific media tactics and strategies resulted in many successful print advertising campaigns.

For eight years, Maureen spearheaded the public relations segment of the business. As the PR liaison for the agency, Maureen developed targeted media lists for all clients in addition to writing and generating press releases. She worked closely with clients and numerous editors to develop story ideas that led to the placement of feature articles in leading trade publications. She often managed marketing budgets that exceeded $1M annually. Maureen holds a B.S. in Marketing from Philadelphia University.

For 20 years, October specialized in serials acquisitions and user support as an academic librarian at UNC and LSU. She draws on a solid understanding of the library market and its shift to digital resources. Her fascination with the challenges of scholarly publishing led first to professional association activities in ALA, NASIG and SSP to identify common ground for publishers, librarians and vendors, and later to a self-designed doctoral program (information products, digital libraries, and qualitative research methods). During three years in publishing start ups (PubList.com and booktech.com) October employed skills in marketing, market research, competitive analysis, web-based product development and business development. Now an independent consultant, October specializes in collaborative projects that help libraries, information producers or vendors analyze environmental changes and develop opportunities.

Maureen has an extensive background in scientific and technical publishing, including both print and online products. Her experience includes designing, implementing, and managing editorial production systems, automated indexing operations, content acquisition systems, as well as content delivery systems. Her recent work has involved mediating between the capabilities of technology suppliers and the business requirements of their customers. She is knowledgeable in electronic publishing technology, computer-aided indexing technology, and industry standards for e-publishing. Her work has included strategic planning, business needs analysis, process analysis, systems design and development, as well as production management.
